Watch Out For Methylisothiazolinone

Woman Applying Lotion On Hand

Have you heard of this chemical called methylisothiazolinone? Yes, it is a long name! Many skincare products that claim "free of parabens" may contain this chemical. It is used to preserve the product and is widely used in lotions, creams, sunscreens, shampoos, washes, and wet wipes.

It is estimated that up to 10% of eczema or dermatitis sufferers may be allergic to this preservative. Furthermore, it makes the skin more sensitive over time, so it's known as a skin sensitizer.

Doctors considered this chemical as a source for allergic reactions and blamed it for an epidemic of skin allergies.

So when you read the ingredient label before you make a purchasing decision, be sure to check if the product contains this chemical.
